MultiWave™ Ultrasound Imaging for the Abdomen
Liver cancer is the 6th most commonly diagnosed cancer and the 3rd most common cause of death from cancer worldwide. Prognosis for liver cancer is poor, so incidence and mortality patterns are very similar.
The highest liver cancer rates are reported in Eastern Asia where in 2002 the age standardized rate was 36, 9 per 100,000 males and 13, 3 per 100,000 females. Lowest liver cancer rates are recorded in Northern Europe (1, 7 per 100,000 females, 3,4 per 100,000 males) and South Central Asia (1, 4 per 100,000 females, 2, 6 per 100,000 males).
Abdominal palpation is used in modern medicine to determine tissue stiffness and suspicion and proves to be of great diagnostic value, however, it is a subjective method and is limited to a few accessible organs.
ShearWave™ Elastography from SuperSonic Imagine has emerged as an additional tool in non-invasive tissue stiffness diagnosis, especially in difficult to reach areas such as the abdomen. Elasticity measurements have been reported to be useful for the diagnosis and differentiation of many tumors.
The Aixplorer ® Abdominal package provides both Impeccable grey scale images and ShearWave™ Elastography. Aixplorer’s excellent grey scale imaging is the key to primary assessment of abdominal and pelvic lesions and provides excellent delineation of different morphologies to help guide biopsies and monitor ablation therapy requirements. In addition, real-time, quantitative ShearWave™ Elastography produces a color-coded map of tissue stiffness and with the Q-Box tool, can measure in kilopascals, multiple regions of interest to assess the progression of disease.
